* 아래 글 읽기에 앞서 제 블로그에 처음 들어오시는 분들은 부디 공지사항 에 있는 글들을 읽어봐주시기 부탁드립니다. 제가 어떤 사람이고 어떤 생각에서 이런 글들을 쓰고 있고 제게 연락주시고 싶은 분들은 어떻게 하면 좋을것 같은지 제 생각 정리해 봤습니다.

1. Expedia vs Evernote

행복한 고민이었는데 상당히 고민이 됐다. 익스피디아는 큰 회사였고 풀타임도 거의 보장되는 자리였고, 여행 산업이었고 무엇보다도 같이 일하게 될 Andy 란 애가 너무나 맘에 들었다. 에버노트는 좀더 리스키할 수는 있지만 Bay area에 있었고 너무나 빠르게 성장하는 스타텁, 재밌는 회사였고 테크 산업의 심장부에 있었다. 아래는 내가 정리한 것들. 이렇게 생각을 정리해서 주위 멘토분들께, 따르던 한국 선배분들, VC하시는 분들, 미국 MBA선배분들, Career center계시던 분들 등께 여쭤봤다. 내가 생각을 정리하고 보내니 답을 주는 입장에서도 훨씬 편하게 의견을 주셨다.

Expedia
Job Title – Project Managent in Global Customer Operation Group
What       – Call center restructuring, Management, Design new structure, Do 2~3 at a time.
Direct report – Yale-Wharton-Ex Bain and BCG, fun and engaging. Geek in travel
Pros        – Real American Job(Nothing to do with Asia), Travel industry, Good mentor and structured organization. Easier transfer to Full time. Global Presence 
Cons       – Less upside. Less exciting then Valley. Have to deal with people who’ve been in Travel industry for a long time. Less MBA or Stanford type people. 

Evernote
Job Title – Business Development Specialist, Asian market focus
What      –  Make BD on Evernote with EDUCATION. Make presentation and to pitch to Asian university, including Korea
Direct report – Sincere, Fun, respectful, ex VC, really know Asia well, especially Korea(Used to be missionary)
Pros       – Awesome product, Presence in Asian education market, Easier transition to Valley and Tech world in the future. Love the young and growing company culture. 
Cons      – Not real American job (can be heavy on Korean market), Less structured.

2. Expedia?

주위 분들 중에 대다수는 Evernote가 더 업사이드도 크고 재밌는 기회라며 추천해주셨지만 Expedia를 추천해주시는 분도 더러 있었다. 특히 내가 미국에 남아서 비자 스폰을 받고 정착하는게 목표라면 익스피디아 같은 회사가 훨씬 안정적이고 또 잘 맞을 수 있다는 쪽이었다. 내 MBA선배 멘토는 아래 이메일을 보내줬다.

• Expedia – established public company, interesting industry, online Internet company with a global outlook.  Seattle’s not bad either (but you already know Seattle)
• Evernote – smaller private company, interesting product in consumer space, funded by well known VCs.  More typical Silicon Valley entrepreneurial experience if that’s what you are seeking.
• You can’t go wrong with either option…congrats!

그리고 Andy는 계속해서 내게 익스피디아가 더 낫다고 설득해왔다. 더 리더십 롤이다. 국제적인 롤이다. 풀타임으로 연결된다. 너한테 투자할만한 준비가 되어있고 경험도 있다. 이런식이었다. 아래 이메일 내용들. 무엇보다도 이렇게 계속 나에게 투자하고 이야기해주는게 고마웠다.

I remain very confident that Expedia is well positioned to offer you an exceptional experience this summer:
·         Close coaching and mentorship
·         International travel
·         A project with great impact
·         Fun!
·         Exposure to the travel and technology industries
·         Some people management (and much more upon graduation)
·         Path to full time role
Let’s make this happen!

-One new thought: your Evernote opportunity has you pigeonholed in a role that revolves around ASIA. You came to the US for your MBA for many reasons, one of which was to immerse yourself in the US experience including professionally.

I would strongly urge you to choose Expedia over Evernote.  Reasons why:
·         We are much better positioned to invest in your experience by providing the training and mentorship that you deserve.
o   Are you confident that an early stage growth company can do so?  I’m not.
·         We add a powerful global corporate brand on your resume, which is not currently there.
o   Evernote doesn’t fit the bill here.
·         As discussed previously, your specific role at Evernote further entrenches you as an “Asia guy”
·         Don’t you want to get to Seattle for the summer and beyond?

I appreciate that you face a challenging choice.  However, I am very confident that Expedia offers a clearly superior opportunity and I hope that you’ll conclude the same.  If you’d like, perhaps we can speak in the coming days?

3. Evernote 최종결정

그래도 주위분 대다수는 Evernote를 추천해주셨다. 이렇게 재밌는 기회는 좀처럼 다시 찾기 어렵다는 것. Evernote는 Rocket ship이라는 것. 니가 하기에 따라서 얼마든지 더 큰 업사이드가 있다는 것. 그리고 무엇보다도 이 실리콘 밸리 Tech industry를 떠나는건 지금 아닌거 같다는것 등등 이었다. 그래. Expedia가 당장 세배쯤 많은 돈을 주고 풀타임 보장해주고 그러지만 그런거에 끌리기엔 난 아직 너무 젊다. 좀더 도전적인걸 선택해보자. 그리고 에버노트로 최종 결정했다.

4. 1학년 인턴 서치를 마치며

MBA와서 문화적으로 적응하고 수업시간에 발표하고 이런거 저런거 다 나름 힘들었지만 Job을 찾는건 다른 차원의 Struggle이었다. 무엇보다도 정신적으로 힘들었다. 너무 많이 떨어졌고 할 수 있을지 각이 전혀 안나오는 그런 느낌이었다. 미국에 한번 살아보지도 않았고 영어도 부족하고 한국에서 정부일 하다 온 내가 할 수 있을까. MBA시작전부터 어떻게든 미국에서 인턴잡을거라고 그렇게 노력했는데. 다른 사람들은 어떻게 했는지 몰라도 난 전혀 쉽지 않았다. 산업, 지역, 직종 Industry, Region, Function 중 하나만 바꾸어도 힘들다는데 세개를 다 바꿀 수 있을까. 난 도대체 왜 고시를 봐서 정부에서 일했던 것인가. 별의별 생각이 다 드는 과정이었다.

지나놓고 보니 MBA지원이랑 그리 다르지 않았던것 같다. 여러개 뿌려서 하나 거두면 되는거고 할때까지 하고 정공법이 어렵다면 네트워킹을 노리고. 할 수 있는 최선을 다하고. 실제로 3~5월에도 수많은 스타텁 인턴기회들이 찾아왔다. 이때까지 Job 을 못잡은 친구들이 참 생각보다 많았는데 갑자기 Ivy league나오고 컨설팅 뱅킹하던 늘 부러워만 보이던 친구들이 내게 와서 어떻게 에버노트에서 일하게됐냐며 커피마시자고 하니 어깨가 다 으쓱해졌다.

다시하라고 한다면? 아마 똑같이 하지 않았을까 싶을정도로 별로 후회가 남지는 않았다. 그래 이제 열심히 한번 일해보자. 과천에서 밤새기 그렇게 많이 했는데 여기서 못하겠냐.
